Revitalizing the
Caring Community Program

For almost 20 years, the Caring Community (CC) program has provided a way for Holy Trinity members who live in the same geographic area to get to know one another. Some groups hosted social events while others provided cards and casseroles to members experiencing the joy of a new baby or the sorrow of losing a spouse. In its early years, the program also served as a phone tree, alerting members of breaking news within the congregation.

With the advent of email, and fewer members able to find the time to serve as CC leaders, the program became inactive. The Evangelism Committee has recently approved a plan to revitalize the program by restructuring it. A five-person Caring Community Coordinating Team has replaced the 30+ CC leaders, and the small groups of 10 to 12 households originally overseen by a CC leader have been replaced by seven larger groups structured by zip code.

The coordinating team (Kristin Boone, Merrilee Jacobson, Carla Osborne, Phyllis Parker and Debra Weinel) will create ways for members of the new CCs to get together at pre-existing HTELC events, like Advent dinners, Lenten dinners, Rally Day picnics, etc. Over time, the members of the CCs may decide to host additional events on their own or arrange get-togethers based on mutual interests, i.e., children's play dates, tennis matches, bike rides, etc.

The first CC event under the new structure took place on December 7 at the second Advent supper. CC members sat together, got to know each other through a brief ice-breaker, and came up with names for their groups.
