Being personally involved in a disaster can be very devastating. Individuals are often faced with loss of property, personal injury, and sometimes death. Our preparedness and response to disasters may soften the impact that such an event can have on the lives of others. Helping others to recover from a disaster can also be a personally rewarding experience.

The Disaster Response Team (DRT) volunteers equipped with chain saws can help cut up fallen trees; folks with 4-wheel drive vehicles can get you to a doctor's appointment or the grocery store; and people with ladders can climb onto your roof to cover or repair a leak. When a disaster strikes, the DRT sets up a response center, takes calls, matches volunteers with the needs, and provides the assistance for recovery operations.

The team also trains volunteers to help with disaster recovery operations, not only in this area but in other communities that have experienced a disaster, such as home repairs to victims of flooding. Working in concert with the Lutheran Disaster Services, these teams may be deployed for up to two weeks — anywhere there is a need. So if you find enjoyment in helping others, join the DRT. Your services are needed!
